Yet, in our fast-paced lives, many settle for six hours—or even less—night after night, unaware of the hidden toll on cognition and long-term brain health. Here’s what the science tells us and practical steps you can take to safeguard your most important organ.
The Cognitive Cost of Short Sleep
Adults who routinely sleep six hours or fewer experience measurable declines in memory consolidation, attention, and decision-making speed. In one long-term study of over 2,600 older adults, sleeping under five hours nightly nearly doubled the risk of developing dementia compared with those getting the recommended seven to nine hours . Even one night of acute sleep restriction elevates amyloid-β levels—a protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease—suggesting that disrupted sleep may accelerate toxic protein buildup in the brain.
