When navigating brain-related concerns—whether it’s memory loss, attention problems, or recovery from a stroke—people often wonder: should I see a neurologist or a neuropsychologist?
The answer? Often both.
What’s the Difference?
Neurologists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat disorders of the nervous system such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and strokes. Their approach is typically biological or medical: they use tests like MRIs or EEGs, and prescribe medication or refer for surgery where needed.
Neuropsychologists, on the other hand, are psychologists with advanced training in how brain function affects cognition, emotion, and behaviour. They don’t use medication—but instead conduct detailed assessments to understand how your brain is functioning. This includes testing memory, attention, language, problem-solving, and emotional functioning.
Why It’s Not Either/Or—But Both
These two professionals often work together as a team. Here’s how:
A neurologist might detect signs of a neurological disorder such as dementia or traumatic brain injury.
A neuropsychologist would then assess the specific cognitive and behavioural impact of the condition—what’s working well, what’s not, and what to do next.
The neurologist may treat the underlying medical issue, while the neuropsychologist creates a roadmap for rehabilitation, support, or school/work adjustments.
This collaborative model ensures that patients receive both a medical diagnosis and a functional understanding of how their brain condition affects daily life.
When Should You See a Neuropsychologist?
You might benefit from a neuropsychological assessment if you or a loved one are experiencing:
- Memory difficulties
- Trouble concentrating
- Sudden personality or mood changes
- Difficulty with speech, learning, or decision-making
- Recovery from stroke, brain injury, or brain surgery
An assessment helps clarify not just what is happening, but why—and what can be done about it.
