We aim to make your assessment experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare:
What to Expect During Your Neuropsychological Assessment

Booking Your Appointment
- Plan Ahead: Medico-legal assessments must be scheduled well in advance.
- Morning Appointments Only:
Assessments take place in the mornings and last approximately 3–4 hours.

The Night Before
- Get Good Sleep: A restful night is essential for optimal cognitive functioning.
- Avoid Substances: Refrain from alcohol or anything that may impair mental performance.

What to Bring
- A Companion: Someone who knows you well (family or friend) must accompany you.
- Important Documents:
- School reports (for child patients), especially pre-injury/illness.
- Glasses or hearing aids (if used).
- A list of current medications.
- A snack for the mid-session break.

On the Day
- Initial Interview: Begins with the accompanying person to gather important background information.
- During the Assessment: Your companion is welcome to wait in our comfortable lounge or return later.
- Break Time: We offer tea or coffee during a short mid-morning break.

After the Assessment
- Reports are provided either directly to clients or to referring attorneys or insurance companies, as per prior agreement.
- Private clients typically receive feedback on assessment findings, along with recommendations for further management. Feedback is provided on a separate day from the assessment.

Special Considerations
- All Ages Welcome: We assess patients of all ages - from infants to the elderly.
- Multilingual Support: We accommodate English, Afrikaans, and Xhosa speakers. Translators can be arranged for other languages.
- Accessibility: Our practice is equipped to support patients with visual, hearing, or mobility impairments.

Consultation Fees
- We charge close to medical aid rates for assessments for non-forensic matters and separate rates for medico-legal/forensic purposes.
- Please note that report are charged for separately and are generally not covered by medical aids.

Dr. Sharon Truter is a Neuropsychologist and Counselling Psychologist, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), holding a doctorate in the field of Health Psychology. With over 25 years of experience as a practicing psychologist—and more than 20 of those dedicated to the field of neuropsychology—she brings both depth of knowledge and compassion to her work.
