16 May 2025Preparing for Your Neuropsychological Assessment
Undergoing a neuropsychological assessment can feel daunting, but knowing what to expect and how to prepare will help you—and your clinician—get the most accurate picture of your brain–behaviour profile.
What to Expect
Your assessment typically unfolds in two phases:
Clinical Interview
You’ll meet one-on-one with your neuropsychologist to review medical history, discuss current concerns, and describe everyday challenges. Bringing a family member or close friend can provide valuable collateral information about your day-to-day functioning.
Formal Testing
A trained technician (under the neuropsychologist’s guidance) will guide you through a series of tasks—paper-and-pencil measures, computerized exercises, and puzzles—that evaluate domains such as memory, attention, language, processing speed, executive function, and visuospatial skills. Testing may last 2½–3½ hours for those over 65, or 4–6 hours for younger adults, with short breaks offered to prevent fatigue.
Results are scored and interpreted in the weeks that follow, yielding a detailed report of your cognitive strengths and challenges.
Tips for a Successful Evaluation
Rest Well the Night Before
Adequate sleep stabilizes attention and memory, ensuring that fatigue doesn’t skew your performance.
Eat a Balanced Meal
Sustained energy and stable blood sugar help you stay focused throughout testing.
Be Honest and Give Full Effort
Many tests include embedded validity measures to detect low effort; your genuine best effort helps ensure that results reflect true abilities—not motivational factors.
Note Medication Changes and Recent Health Events
Any new medications, dosage adjustments, or acute illnesses can influence cognition. Having this information on hand gives your neuropsychologist essential context for interpreting your results.
After Your Assessment
Within a couple of weeks, you’ll receive a comprehensive feedback session and written report. These will outline:
Diagnostic impressions (e.g., mild cognitive impairment, attention-deficit/hyperactivity patterns, post-injury effects)
Recommendations for cognitive rehabilitation exercises, compensatory strategies (like external memory aids), and environmental modifications
Referrals to other specialists (e.g., occupational therapy, speech-language pathology) if needed
